WCAG 2.2: What’s New and What Matters

If you’re involved in web design or development, you’ve probably heard of WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines). These guidelines provide a set of standards for making web content accessible to people with disabilities. In June 2022, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) released an updated version of WCAG, known as WCAG 2.2.

So, what’s new in WCAG 2.2? Here’s a quick rundown:

Changes to Success Criteria

WCAG 2.2 includes a few changes to existing success criteria. These changes are intended to clarify the requirements and make them more consistent with the latest web technologies.

For example, there’s a new success criterion for time-based media, which requires that alternative text for time-based media provide descriptive identification of the non-text content. There’s also a new success criterion for focus order, which requires that the order in which elements receive focus when keyboard navigation is used is predictable and logical.

WCAG 2.2 includes a number of new notes, which provide additional information about the success criteria. These notes can be helpful for understanding the intent of the success criteria and how to apply them in real-world scenarios.
